Health: How to snore less
Snoring occurs when the soft palate, uvula, adenoids and
tonsils vibrate when breathing. It affects about 75% of people. It is a regular
ordeal for some and a rare occurrence for others.
Here are few tips to help you reduce snoring if you’re
bothered about it:
- Minimize alcohol intake and smoking
- Get rid of nasal congestion and a runny nose
- Maintain a healthy weight (a large amount of tissue around the neck increases snoring)
- Get used to sleeping on your side instead of on your back
- Get enough sleep
It is important to distinguish between snoring and apnea,
which can be dangerous.
Apnea is the interruption of breathing for more than 10
seconds several times in a row while asleep. This is a result of narrowed
airways and can cause heart disease, hypertension, as well as lead to constant
daytime sleepiness, fatigue, and decreased performance.
If you suspect apnea, you should consult a doctor.
